Colonoscopy is a safe and common procedure used to examine the inside of the large bowel (colon). At Otago Surgical Associates (OSA) in Dunedin, we provide local colonoscopy services for patients across Otago, helping with timely diagnosis and treatment of bowel conditions.

This guide explains why colonoscopy is done, how to prepare, what to expect during the procedure, and aftercare, so you feel informed and confident.

Colonoscopy: Patient Guide at Otago Surgical Associates

What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera at the tip (a colonoscope) to look inside your colon. It helps detect inflammation, polyps, bleeding, or cancer.

During the procedure:

  • Small tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken.

  • Polyps can often be removed.

Why is Colonoscopy Recommended?

Your doctor may recommend a colonoscopy for:

  • Bowel symptoms like bleeding, changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, or unexplained anemia

  • Positive bowel screening tests

  • Family or personal history of polyps or colorectal cancer

  • Monitoring inflammatory bowel disease

  • Unexplained weight loss or chronic diarrhoea

Preparing for Your Colonoscopy

Good bowel prep is essential for a clear view and accurate results.

Before the procedure:

  • Follow a low-residue diet for several days

  • Avoid seeds, nuts, and high-fiber foods

  • Review medications with your doctor (some, like blood thinners or iron tablets, may need adjustment)

Bowel preparation:

  • Drink a prescribed laxative solution the day before (and sometimes the morning of)

  • Expect frequent, loose bowel motions and stay near a toilet

  • Drink clear fluids to stay hydrated

  • Before the colonoscopy:

    • Do not eat solid food; clear fluids may be allowed

    • Arrange for someone to drive you home (sedation is commonly used)

    • Nursing staff will review your medical history and medications

    • Your surgeon will answer any last-minute questions

    • You will recover until sedation wears off; most patients go home the same day

    • Mild bloating, wind, or abdominal discomfort is normal

    • Rest for the remainder of the day; avoid driving, alcohol, or important decisions for 24 hours

    • Resume normal eating unless advised otherwise

    • Immediate findings are explained on the day

    • Biopsy results are usually available in 1–2 weeks

    • Your surgeon will provide a follow-up plan, including repeat colonoscopy if needed
