Endoscopy
What Is an Endoscopy?
During an endoscopy, the endoscope is gently guided through the mouth (for upper gastrointestinal examination) or through the rectum (for lower gastrointestinal examination, such as colonoscopy). The camera transmits high-quality images to a screen, enabling detailed assessment of the lining of the digestive tract.
The procedure may be used to:
Investigate symptoms
Detect inflammation, ulcers, polyps, or tumours
Take tissue samples (biopsy)
Remove polyps
Treat bleeding
Dilate narrowed areas
Endoscopy is both a diagnostic and therapeutic tool
Types of Endoscopy
Gastroscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). These procedures allow detailed examination of different parts of the digestive tract to diagnose and, in some cases, treat a range of gastrointestinal conditions.
