Graeme Millar is a General Surgeon with advanced specialist training in Breast Oncology and Hernia Surgery. He has served the Otago community for over two decades and is recognised for his expertise in contemporary breast surgical techniques and patient-centred care

  • Originally from Glasgow, Graeme completed his medical training in Scotland before relocating to Dunedin in 1999. He completed his General Surgical training and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) examinations in Dunedin.

    Following this, he undertook a dedicated Breast Surgery Fellowship in the United Kingdom at:

    • Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital

    • Edinburgh Breast Unit

    Graeme returned to Dunedin Hospital in 2004 as a Consultant General and Breast Surgeon

  • Public Practice
    Graeme has been a Consultant General and Breast Surgeon at Dunedin Hospital since 2004, contributing extensively to the development of breast surgical services in the region.

    Private Practice
    Graeme began private practice at Mercy Hospital in 2011 and currently consults from Suite 6, Marinoto Clinic. He provides specialist breast and hernia surgical care using contemporary, evidence-based techniques.

  • Recognising the increasing subspecialisation within breast surgery, Graeme has undertaken additional international training to ensure his patients benefit from modern surgical approaches. This includes:

    • Early adoption of sentinel lymph node biopsy

    • Sabbatical training at the Edinburgh Breast Unit (2017) in:

      • Targeted axillary dissection (TAD)

      • Oncoplastic breast surgery

    In parallel, Graeme has attended international hernia surgery workshops for over 15 years, maintaining expertise in modern hernia repair techniques

  • Graeme has proudly made Dunedin and Otago his home, raising his family in the region and contributing significantly to local surgical services. He has played a key role in advancing multidisciplinary breast care, championing the integration of Specialist Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists into breast teams at both Dunedin and Mercy Hospitals
