Mark is an Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric surgeon with a special interest in the management of obesity, gastro-oesophageal conditions, and cancers of the stomach and oesophagus. He is known for his calm, informative approach and is committed to ensuring patients feel supported and well-informed throughout their treatment journey.

  • Originally from London, Mark graduated from the Imperial College School of Medicine. He moved to New Zealand to complete his General Surgical training and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2013. Having first come to Dunedin as a medical student, he developed a strong connection to the region and its people.

    Following FRACS, Mark undertook subspecialty post-fellowship training in the United Kingdom. He completed an Oesophagogastric Fellowship at University Hospital Southampton, gaining extensive experience in the management of complex benign and malignant oesophageal and gastric conditions. He later worked as a Consultant Oesophagogastric Surgeon at both University Hospital Southampton and Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth.

    Mark returned to New Zealand in 2017 to complete dedicated Bariatric Surgery training at Waitematā DHB, where he performed both primary and revisional bariatric procedures.

    Mark is appointed as an Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon with Te Whatu Ora Southern, providing specialist care for patients with complex upper gastrointestinal and metabolic conditions.

    Private Practice
    Mark consults in Dunedin at Suite 6, Marinoto Clinic, and operates at Mercy Hospital. To improve access to specialist care, he also runs regular outreach clinics in:

    • Wanaka

    • Oamaru

    • Invercargill
