Bowel Resections and Colorectal Surgery

Otago Surgical Associates (OSA) provides expert assessment and surgical care for colorectal conditions, including colon cancer, rectal cancer, and diverticular disease, for patients across Dunedin, Otago, and the lower South Island. Early diagnosis, careful planning, and timely surgery are essential for the best outcomes

Specialist colorectal care for Dunedin and Otago

  • Right-sided resections (right hemicolectomy): removal of the caecum and ascending colon, plus lymph nodes, with bowel reconnected.

Left-sided/sigmoid resections: removal of the affected colon segment and lymph nodes, reconnecting remaining bowel.

Laparoscopic vs open surgery: Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery offers smaller incisions, less pain, shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery. Open surgery may be needed for complex cases, large tumors, previous surgery, or emergencies. The approach is personalised and discussed with your surgeon.

  • Rectal cancer requires specialised surgery due to its location near nerves and sphincters. Symptoms may include rectal bleeding, tenesmus, altered bowel habit, or pelvic discomfort.

    Surgical options:

    • Anterior resection – removes rectum, preserves sphincters

    • Low anterior resection – may involve temporary stoma

    • Abdominoperineal resection (APR) – permanent stoma if sphincters cannot be preserved.

Diverticular Disease

Diverticular disease occurs when pouches form in the colon, commonly the sigmoid. Surgery is needed for recurrent diverticulitis or complications (abscess, fistula, stricture). Typical surgery involves removal of the diseased colon segment and reconnection

Recovery and Local Care

  • Pre-op assessment includes colonoscopy, imaging, and blood tests.

  • Hospital stay: 3–7 days; early mobilisation and gradual return to eating encouraged.

  • Temporary or permanent stomas are supported by specialist nurses.
